Civil War Storecard Tokens
During the American Civil War, small change was almost impossible to find in circulation. Out of necessity merchants and other groups had tokens made as substitutes for cent coins. Enterprising merchants saw this as an opportunity to advertise, so they placed their business name on the tokens. Civil War Storecards are collected by location and merchant or type of merchant. The standard work on this type of token is "U. S. Civil War Store Cards" by George and Melvin Fuld.
